No for Faux cabulary

I love word games so I had high hopes for Faux Cabulary. Perhaps I am far too judgmental, or too hard to please… regardless. I wasn’t sold on this one, which was disappointing because it was the one I was most excited to play out of my latest shipment from Board Game exchange.

The concept of the game is simple, and can easily be picked up by players ages 13 and up; with 3-7 people, ideally 6. It’s perfect for people who love to make up nonsensical words.

In each round, one player is the ‘Wordmeister’ and the others pull three word cubes at random from the box. The Wordmeister reads a Faux Cabulary card out which entails a definition of some kind. In response, each player creates a word using 1 to 3 of their cubes- hiding it in their plastic holder. They do this so the Wordmeister doesn’t know who create which word. They scramble the holders and reveals them one at a time. Whichever word the Wordmeister prefers most, they will award their Faux Cabulary card to that player. Players then return the dice, the Wordmeister position switches and whoever collects the most cards wins.

So, it’s fun in the sense you get to make up weird sounding words, but it just doesn’t fulfill my personal idea of a true word game. It also wasn’t as funny as I would have expected. A game like this where everyone is creating weird sounding words, you’d think it’d have everyone in stitches… but it wasn’t like that even though I was with a rowdy crowd! Words can’t explain why this was a massive miss for me, but it was. If you have your own opinion on it I’d love to hear it.

Maybe I’ll try it again with younger folks next time.

1-4 Too Much Awful
5-7.5- Not so Awesome
7.6-8.5 Almost awesome
8.6-9.4 – Awesome!
9.5-10- Totally Awesome!
6.0 Not so Awesome

Meh. Could have been so much better. Was not as exciting or unique as I had expected.
