If there is someone out there who has never played Guess Who (Hasbro)? I would love to meet you. This had to be easily one of my favorite games over the longest period of time throughout my childhood.
“Beloved 1980’s version of the classic mystery face game is back! There’s a mystery person on your opponent’s card. Can you find the matching face in the crowd? Start with your game full of silly-looking characters. Then ask the right questions to eliminate the wrong faces! Does your person have blue eyes? Is your person wearing a hat? Once you’re down to a face or two – solve the mystery by guessing who! If you’re the first to identify your opponent’s mystery person, you win.”
This is the definition of a simple game but is so much fun in the fact that anybody can win. You don’t need a special skill set (other than a somewhat functional memory) to have a competitive edge here.
If you’ve never played it really is as simple as this: Two opponents, two separate cards with two different characters that each opponent possesses and keeps secret from one another… and a bunch of other characters spread out before you (on a separate but identical “board” of characters for your opponent too). They are little flaps if you will- that prop up until you have asked enough questions to rule them out- at which point you knock them down. Otherwise, you just ask questions back and forth until you feel confident enough to guess who your opponents character card features.
I wish I could tell you what exactly had me so hooked with this game back when I was a kid, but I can tell you as an adult I appreciated the lack of complication, the natural fun- and overall tone of the game. It’s a no frills guessing game that has you wanting to play over and over again in one night. Of course, being older now it’s certainly seeming easier (you have a better sense of what questions to ask than say, a 6 year old). The game feels faster now- but I suppose that’s to be expected right?
Beware, there is supposedly a second version of this game out now. I’ll be honest when I say the descriptions I’ve heard from users don’t make much sense. That tells me everything I need to know at least, I’m sticking with the 80’s version! Duh!
Anyways, this is a game worth playing- especially if you have children around. It’s always good when you don’t need to spend a half hour interpreting the rules sometimes 🙂
1-4 Too Much Awful
5-7.5- Not so Awesome
7.6-8.5 Almost awesome
8.6-9.4 – Awesome!
9.5-10- Totally Awesome!
If you ask me to play a round or two of Guess Who? (The original) I will always say yes. It is so simplistic, light, fun and easy to play- there isn't a good reason not to! This is a classic for kids and can make a childhood, trust me! It's unlike your other "board games" and for that it will always stick out. On par with Don't Break the Ice, Battleship and Operation- the interactive qualities make the game!
